Children and Drama (6)

  • Beware, Beware, My Beauty Fair
    Beware, Beware, My Beauty Fair
Jean Lafleur  &  Peter Svatek 1972 28 min
An engaging drama for children by the Children's Theatre, Montréal. On a school auditorium stage, an audience watches the portrayal of the beauty and the beast adventure. But the film audience sees more. Behind the scenes, in the shadows and up dark stairways, another drama develops with suspense to equal the fairy tale's. It is a play within a play, convincingly acted out by a talented group of young thespians.
  • Marianne's Theatre
    Marianne's Theatre
    Co Hoedeman 2004 15 min
In Co Hoedeman's animated short about a troupe of marionette acrobats, everything that can go wrong does. No matter what the ringleader does, each act goes awry until we begin to wonder who's really running the show. Even when Marianne, the master puppeteer, emerges at the end of the show to take her final bow, those little acrobats still seem to have a mind of their own. Brilliantly executed, this film dissolves the boundaries between theatre and animated film to create a magical experience.
  • On the Road with La Mouette
On the Road with La Mouette
    Philippe d' Hauterive  &  François Aubry 2001 52 min
This feature documentary follows Le Théâtre de La Mouette, a travelling puppet theatre company comprised of a husband, his wife and their 3 teenage sons. The family has crossed Canada from east to west, and north to the Yukon, taking their amusing play (with a serious ecological message) to remote towns and villages. This film traces their 7th trip in 10 years, this time to the Maritimes and Newfoundland.
  • The Passion and Puppetry of Ronnie Burkett
The Passion and Puppetry of Ronnie Burkett
    Michelle Mama 2024 5 min
Groundbreaking theatre artist Ronnie Burkett has wowed audiences for decades with his imaginative and provocative reinventions of puppetry and storytelling. The Passion and Puppetry of Ronnie invites us into his home studio and his creative process, as the puppeteer generously and vulnerably reflects on a career that has pushed boundaries while allowing him to be genuinely himself.
  • Sir! Sir!
    Sir! Sir!
    Michael Rubbo 1968 20 min
Here is what happened in a Toronto classroom when teachers occupied the children's desks and children became the teachers. The film grew out of another, Mrs. Ryan's Drama Class, where young children found their way into creative drama. There is food for thought in this impromptu reversal of roles.
  • What If?
    What If?
    Noam Gonick 2011 5 min
"Always remember to play," says Leslee Silverman, the visionary force behind the Manitoba Theatre for Young People, to 10-year-old William. The little boy stands at centre stage, rehearsing an exciting new role - that of Leslee Silverman.

Silverman observes with her customary wisdom and good humour. Drawing from Winnipeg's rich cultural tradition, she engages young people in the adventure of theatre, fired by the conviction that art belongs to everyone.
