Sabre and Foil

1967 7 min
Leaving soon

The ancient and deadly sport of fencing, demonstrated by world masters in competition. The film is not a record of individual duels but it does capture the cool, merciless attack in a way to focus the eye on every swift maneuver. The cold clash of steel on steel, the staccato pound of feet, the strange, sculptured postures of the masked, white figures - all make absorbing, convincing viewing.

Education

Ages 14 to 15
School subjects
Fencing may not be as popular as hockey in Canada, but it is still an Olympic sport. To familiarize students with it, divide the class into two groups. Have those in the first group do research with the goal of promoting fencing as a combat sport, while those in the second group focus on fencing as an artistic discipline. Both groups’ research must explore the history of fencing.
