Hunters and Bombers

1991 53 min
Leaving soon

The hunters are the Innu people and the bombers are the air forces of several NATO countries, which conduct low-level flights over the Innu's hunting terrain. The impact of the jets is hotly debated by peace groups, Indigenous people, environmentalists and the military. But what is often overlooked are the many complex changes underway in Innu society, as social and technological changes confront a traditional hunting culture.

Study Guide
School subjects
Students consider Federal–Aboriginal interaction by researching and reporting Innu and other existing land claims, including the Innu “New Dawn” agreement of 2011. Students research and write brief biographies of Aboriginal leaders, including Elizabeth “Tshaukuesh” Penashue (featured in the film). Oral tradition: Each group chooses an Innu tale (e.g., that of Tshakapesh), any other Aboriginal tale, or a tale from their childhood, whatever their culture; students then represent the tale using dramatic enactment, puppets, storytelling and drawing.
