Ce long métrage documentaire propose la mémoire en remède à l'oubli. Car le temps presse. Une génération de jeunes Chiliens a grandi dans l'ignorance des faits entourant le coup d'État du 11 septembre 1973. Ce jour-là, le gouvernement socialiste démocratiquement élu de Salvador Allende est renversé par le général Pinochet. Ce jour-là, Juan devait se marier. Il a failli mourir en combattant les troupes du dictateur. En sa compagnie, Patricio Guzman retourne pour la première fois au Chili, 23 ans plus tard. Dans ses bagages, il apporte La bataille du Chili. À l'époque, le film avait fait le tour du monde, mais il reste interdit au Chili. Discrètement, le cinéaste le montre aux siens, le fait découvrir aux jeunes. Après la projection, une petite assemblée d'étudiants est en état de choc. Leur soif de vérité est inextinguible. Ils se sentent investis d'un devoir historique. Ce sont eux qui feront le Chili de demain.
