Indian-Canadian filmmaker Nisha Pahuja was born in New Delhi and is based in Toronto. Her directing credits include Bollywood Bound (2002), Diamond Road (2007), The World Before Her (2012) and the NFB co-production To Kill a Tiger (2022), an Oscar nominee and the winner of 19 awards. The doc is about a farmer in India who demands justice for his 13-year-old daughter, a survivor of sexual assault. Pahuja’s respectful treatment of this disturbing subject matter focuses on the hurdles experienced by the main characters, foregrounding the protagonists’ courage above all else.
In addition to the Academy Award nomination, Pahuja’s work has received a host of other prestigious cinema honours, including a Grammy nomination, the Best Documentary Feature Award and the Jury Award at the Tribeca Film Festival, Best Canadian Feature Documentary at Hot Docs, and Canadian Screen Awards and Gemini Awards.
