Michel Gauthier (4)

Michel Gauthier

Michel Gauthier directed or co-directed five NFB films during the 1970s, all of which depicted rural Quebec and its inhabitants. Made as part of the Challenge for Change program, his documentaries took a direct cinema/cinéma verité approach, exploring regions of the belle province that enchanted tourists but whose locals struggled, with most young people leaving and high unemployment among the adult population. All of Gauthier’s films were shot in French and have no English versions yet, except for Salvador Allende Gossens: A Testimony (1974), which captured a brief encounter with the president of Chile before his death in September 1973. René Lévesque, Théo Gagné and Joseph Gosselin also appear in this historical film.
