Joelie Sanguya
Inuk director Joelie Sanguya was born on Baffin Island and worked within the Nunavut school system for 25 years before moving into film and TV production. He joined forces with Charlotte DeWolff and Ole Gjerstad to form Piksuk Media in 2005— with a mission “to promote Inuit history and culture and to train Inuit in all aspects of media work.” With Qimmit: A Clash of Two Truths, co-directed with Gjerstad, Sanguya investigates the mass killing of sled dogs between 1950 and 1970, a police practice that forced the Inuit into permanent settlements. These events are remembered differently by Inuit elders and RCMP authorities.

Qimmit : un choc, deux véritésOle Gjerstad & Joelie Sanguya 2010 52 minDans ce long métrage documentaire, deux cinéastes inuits cherchent à savoir comment et pourquoi le chien de traîneau a disparu dans les années 1960, un mystère qui a laissé de terribles cicatrices dans tout l'Arctique canadien. Chez les Inuits, le chien de traîneau représente non seulement une façon de vivre, mais aussi un lien profond, persistant, à la terre. Entre les années 1950 et 1970, le mode de vie semi-nomade des Inuits a pratiquement disparu. Les familles se sont regroupées et fixées. La population de chiens de traîneau a diminué si bien qu’il n’en resté que quelques centaines. Les Inuits sont nombreux à croire que leurs bêtes ont été tuées par la Gendarmerie royale, mandatée par le gouvernement fédéral pour vider le territoire de ses habitants et les « civiliser ». La GRC récuse ces histoires, soutenant qu'elles sont pure invention ou le résultat d'un malentendu culturel. -
