“My Cree heritage became part of my life again through doing artwork,” says Jesse Gouchey, a young artist from Red Deer, Alberta, who draws inspiration from hip-hop, punk and other contemporary pop-culture sources. Working across a spectrum of visual media—from graphic novels to painting and photography—Gouchey creates playful work like Baaad Dream, a short made through the NFB’s Hothouse animation apprenticeship program.
