Christine Chevarie-Lessard

Christine Chevarie-Lessard is a content creator working in film, television, radio and digital media. She directed the documentary feature A Delicate Balance, which premiered at RIDM in 2018, winning the Women Inmates’ Award and obtaining a Gémeaux nomination, and the short films The Vigil (2020), La comédienne d’Amérique (2013) and Quand tout est possible (2011). Her television projects include Les voleurs d’identité (Télé-Québec, 2020), which earned two nominations at the 2021 Gémeaux. Christine has also produced radio content and podcasts for Radio-Canada.

    Filmed from the point of view of its young subjects, A Delicate Balance takes an introspective look at the lives of four dancers on the cusp of adolescence—that critical time in one’s life when childhood fantasies begin to collide with the realities of being an adult. A tender and captivating documentary in which students of the École supérieure de ballet du Québec candidly tell their stories and share their hopes and dreams.

    For Linda Rabin, all is movement. That has been the guiding principle for this pioneer of modern dance in Quebec, who has been a dancer, teacher, choreographer, somatic educator and the cofounder with Candace Loubert of l’École de danse contemporaine de Montréal in 1981. In Linda’s view, dancers’ gestures are not merely technically well executed movements, but expressions of life itself. Spirituality, openness to the world and the fluidity of bodies are here conveyed with subtlety.

The film takes us from the grandeur of the landscapes of Côte-Nord, Quebec, where Marguerite has worked for 47 years, into the room where she sits confined today, finding a sort of liberation through prayer and unshakeable solidarity with her sisters who are suffering.
