Ann Marie Fleming
Ann Marie Fleming is an award-winning Canadian filmmaker who has explored a wide range of formats and genres, including animation, documentary, experimental film and fiction. Born on Japan’s Ryukyu Islands, Fleming now lives in Vancouver, Canada. Her films focus on themes of family, history and memory. She has completed 11 projects with the NFB, including New Shoes: An Interview in Exactly Five Minutes (1990), The Magical Life of Long Tack Sam (2003) and I Was a Child of Holocaust Survivors (2010). Fleming’s NFB animated feature Window Horses (2016) earned dozens of awards and accolades worldwide.

Rosie lives in Vancouver with her over-protective Chinese grandparents, and has never been anywhere on her own. But once in Iran, she finds herself in the company of poets and Persians, all of whom tell her stories about her past, the Iranian father she had assumed abandoned her, and about the nature of poetry itself. This is a film about love, finding your own path, and learning how to forgive.

Stories Sarah TellsAnn Marie Fleming 2013 4 minThis short film pays tribute to director, screenwriter and actress Sarah Polley. Her latest film, Stories We Tell, a feature length documentary about her family history, premiered at the 2012 Venice Film Festival, then screened to unanimous acclaim at the Telluride Film Festival, the Toronto International Film Festival, and the Sundance Film Festival. It was called “a brilliant film: an enthralling, exquisitely layered masterpiece” by Maclean’s film critic Brian D. Johnson. Here, a whimsical, playful film tells the story of the kinds of stories Polley tells. Using humorous, simple line animation, the film comments on the messiness of life and art.
